Closing the gap between global goals and local practice
Global sustainability frameworks are sound. What fails, too often, is the fit between those frameworks and the places they are meant to serve.
Over many years of work with foundations, charities, companies and public bodies, we have watched the same pattern repeat. Organisations adopt the Sustainable Development Goals and international standards with genuine commitment. Strategies are written, indicators are chosen, reports are published. Yet on the ground, progress stalls.
The reason is rarely a lack of will or money. It is context. Programmes designed in one setting are transferred to another with little change. Global language meets local values, institutions and ways of life, and the two never quite connect. Communities are consulted late, if at all. Indicators measure what donors understand rather than what residents experience. The result is familiar: fragmented projects, low local ownership and change that fades when the funding ends.
We believe sustainability only lasts when it is designed for its context from the start. That means reading the culture, the institutions, the economy, the environment and the relationships of a place before prescribing anything. It means translating global goals into local priorities, not the other way round. And it means building the capability of local people to lead the work themselves.
We founded Sustainia Academy to close this gap. Our work combines rigorous research, context-sensitive design and practical learning, so that the organisations we serve can turn global commitments into results their communities recognise as their own.
